Once Hakko Denshin Ryu techniques are learned, it’s time to test them against real-world attacks. Henka — controlled attack simulations, allow students to apply their learning to a myriad of self-defense scenarios. As always, students work in pairs slowly adapting to these scenarios. We practice first with safety in mind and then gradually increase speed and accuracy.

At the first degree, we have 7 principles that can be applied to all attacks. Hakko Denshin Ryu techniques seamlessly flow from one to the next. As the student develops, they begin to see that there are no mistakes in adapting to an attack. Even if a practitioner intends to use a particular technique and finds themselves in a different position, they can transition to another technique to accomplish control over their attacker.
